Principal's Message

The wonderful Sunset Primary School continues to go from strength to strength! The past few years has seen the school enjoy countless changes and improvements, and a huge increase in student engagement at school.

Sunset offers numerous extra-curricular activities, lunch in schools, free stationery, zero fees and small classes – a recipe for success for your tamariki.

Our staff have developed a fantastic localised curriculum and are currently engaged in very high quality professional development in cultural responsiveness, wellbeing and mathematics – meaning your children will receive the very best in educational practices at Sunset.

Our school has small classes thanks to generous funding from the board of trustees, so your children will get plenty of 1:1 support with their teachers and our fantastic Learning Support Workers.

At the beginning of 2021 we received all new furniture for our classrooms, and over the next two years all our classrooms are being renovated so we are working very hard on providing the very best environment for our students.

If you think you might like to send your children in to Sunset Primary School, come in and see me. I’m always happy to talk to whānau about whether or not Sunset Primary School is the right school for your child.

Nga Mihi,
Eden Chapman | Principal

Kia Ora whanau,
With the very heavy rain expected this afternoon I understand some parents might want to collect their children from school earlier.
That's fine - please come through the office to let Kate know, then you can collect your kids from their classrooms.
Vans will still run if necessary this afternoon, but will likely arrive a bit earlier than usual.

Panui from Sunset School Board's Presiding Member
28 May 2025

Kia ora koutou,

Last week, our wonderful principal Eden Chapman announced his resignation as principal of our school. Eden has been appointed as the new principal of Ngongotahā School. We wish Eden all the very best.

This means we now need to find a new principal for our school. We are committed to finding someone who will lead our school, continue to deliver excellent teaching and learning to our students, and care for our school, staff, students, and community. The new principal will begin in Term 4 of this year.

The Board is committed to finding the very best principal to replace Eden. We are also dedicated to keeping our community, staff, and students informed about our plans and progress in appointing a permanent replacement. We aim to announce the Acting Principal for Term 3 2025 within the next few days. We have also engaged the services of education consultant Jackie Talbot to assist us in this process.

There are several steps we need to go through to ensure we appoint a principal who will lead our school effectively, connect with our community, and educate our students in alignment with our strategic plan — growing our school continuously and striving for excellence in all areas. We need input from our community, staff, and students about the kind of person we should be looking for.

What you can expect:

Consultation – We will open a survey from today (https://tinyurl.com/mr44derv), asking for your input. We will also be consulting with the staff and students at our school. This information will help inform our job description and recruitment process. The link to the anonymous survey will be posted on the Sunset School Facebook page. It will remain open until Wednesday, the 11th of June. Please take the opportunity to share your thoughts. A paper copy is also attached for those unable to complete the online version. Please fill it in and return it to school by Wednesday, the 11th of June.

Advertising – The advertisement for the permanent principal position will be posted online through the Education Gazette by the 16th of June and will remain open for four weeks, closing on the 13th of July. We will let you know once it is live.

Interviews and appointment – Interviews will be held towards the end of July or the beginning of August. We will undertake a robust process of selection and reference checking over approximately two weeks. We aim to make an announcement to staff, students, and the community by mid-August, so the new principal is ready to start in Term 4 2025.

We will keep you informed as we progress. This is an exciting time for the Board, and we are committed to ensuring we appoint the very best person for our school.
